On Imposter Syndrome

Although I, like probably all of us, have met more than enough people who think that they are the best and that the world revolves around them, not the Sun, I also know that there are many who have to deal with the so-called ”imposter syndrome” more or less every day.

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Well, as described by the National Library of Medicine,

“Imposter syndrome (IS) is a behavioral health phenomenon described as self-doubt of intellect, skills, or accomplishments among high-achieving individuals. These individuals cannot internalize their success and subsequently experience pervasive feelings of self-doubt, anxiety, depression, and/or apprehension of being exposed as a fraud in their work, despite verifiable and objective evidence of their successfulness. The terms imposter syndrome and imposter phenomenon (IP) are used interchangeably, with IP gaining more frequent use in recent literature. ”

My experience with this concept

I have to say that I am one of the people that have to live with this syndrome – I often think that I do not know enough about a certain topic despite the thing that I don’t like to discuss about anything I haven’t researched or studied, or think “but who am I to talk about this or to do that?”.

Therefore…I want to write something here so that I can read it whenever necessary.

I am a Letters graduate – I can discuss literature and other art related topics.

I am a digital marketing specialist, focusing on copywriting and content writing and I have worked for various industries: cybersecurity, software development, real estate, food and beverage, wellness, PR – therefore, I also know a thing or two about many digital marketing areas.

I am a huge psychology and neuroscience fan – I’ve had my own journey and made a lot of research on this topic. I probably have a few things to say here as well.

And since you might be wonderinghow do you combat Imposter Syndrome?

Here are a few things that I think can help:

  • acknowledge your feelings;
  • read a bit about this topic and discuss about your experience with someone you can trust – like a psychotherapist or your friends;
  • separate feelings from facts – make a list of everything you’ve accomplished so far and think about the appraisal that you’ve got along the way;
  • ask your friends what they appreciate / respect when it comes to you;
  • remember that you won’t live for ever – if there is something that you’ve always wanted to do, you’d better start now and don’t be afraid to be a beginner / “to suck at something new”.
